What Happens to Unclaimed Vested Tokens? (2026)

Unclaimed vested tokens stay in the vesting contract until the recipient claims them. They don't arrive automatically, they don't usually expire, and on-chain data shows a lot of them are never collected. Here's what happens to them, and how to check whether you have any.

Unclaimed vested tokens stay in the vesting contract, still owed to the recipient, until the recipient claims them. On most vesting platforms an unlock doesn't send anything to your wallet: it only makes the tokens claimable. Nothing expires on the platforms covered in our guides, so the tokens can sit there for years. Whether they are still worth anything depends on the token, not the contract.

Why unlocked tokens don't just arrive

Most crypto vesting is pull, not push. The contract releases value on a schedule, but moving it into your wallet takes a transaction from you: connect the right wallet, open the protocol's app and claim. A salary arrives because the payer's side sends it. A vesting tranche waits until the person being paid fetches it.

How many vested tokens go unclaimed

Vestream measured this directly. Across about 1.28 million finished vesting schedules on eight protocols, read from their contracts in October 2026 (full study, method and data):

  • Nearly 9 in 10 unclaimed schedules had never been claimed even once. People claim everything or nothing.
  • Up to $9.5M was still unclaimed in tokens that still trade.
  • One grant worth about $11,000, in a token with a healthy market, had finished 20 months earlier and was never touched.
ProtocolFinished schedules still unclaimed
Jupiter Lock2.9% (sample)
Streamflow26.1% (sample)
Sablier30.3% (excluding one airdrop)
Hedgey40.9%
UNCX48.1% (excluding two mass distributions)
Smithii60.7%
Team Finance66.3% of allocations (excluding mass distributions)
Unvest87.0%

These rates say more about how each platform is used than about the platform. Protocols that carry many airdrops and small community distributions show higher rates than those used mainly for team and investor grants.

Do unclaimed vested tokens expire?

Usually not. Jupiter Lock's documentation says there is no expiration on the right to claim, and HoodLock's says unclaimed vesting never lapses. On PinkSale vesting locks, unclaimed cycles simply accumulate. The exception is Superfluid: when a payer sets a schedule up to be claimed rather than paid automatically, it carries a claim deadline, and once that passes the claim can no longer be made. Elsewhere, unless a programme sets its own deadline, unlocked tokens stay claimable indefinitely. That's also why they get forgotten: there's no reminder and no consequence for waiting.

Can the project take them back?

Only in limited cases, and normally not what has already vested. Some schedules are revocable or cancellable, but only if the project enabled that when it created them. On revocable Hedgey plans, revoking returns the unvested remainder to the project while what had already vested stays claimable by the recipient. Many vesting deployments switch cancellation off entirely.

Three reasons to claim sooner

  • The token can lose its market. In the study, 87% of unclaimed Sablier streams were in tokens that no longer had a market. Value that was claimable can become worthless while it waits.
  • Contract risk stays with you. Tokens left in a shared vesting contract remain exposed to that contract. In October 2026 a shared vesting pool on one major platform was exploited and tokens belonging to many projects were drained.
  • Tax may already be due. In the UK, the vesting date is usually the taxable point for employee share awards, and HMRC's closest guidance for tokens points the same way. You may owe tax on tokens you haven't claimed. See UK tax on vesting tokens.

How to check whether you have unclaimed tokens

  1. 1Paste each wallet you've used into Vestream's free wallet scan. It checks 13 vesting protocols across EVM chains and Solana, with no sign-up or wallet connection.
  2. 2Look for positions that show tokens claimable now, especially ones whose schedule has already ended.
  3. 3Claim on the protocol's own app. Step-by-step guides: PinkSale PinkLock, Jupiter Lock, Hedgey, Unvest and HoodLock.
  4. 4Turn on unlock alerts for the wallets you track, so the next tranche doesn't wait months.

Unclaimed vested tokens FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens to unclaimed vested tokens?

They stay in the vesting contract, still owed to the recipient, until the recipient claims them. Most platforms don't send unlocked tokens automatically and don't set an expiry; Superfluid's claim-based schedules are an exception, with a deadline set by the payer.

Do vested tokens go to my wallet automatically?

On most crypto vesting platforms, no. An unlock makes tokens claimable, and you have to claim them with a transaction from the recipient wallet.

How much vested crypto goes unclaimed?

In Vestream's October 2026 study of about 1.28 million finished vesting schedules across eight protocols, nearly 9 in 10 unclaimed schedules had never been claimed even once, and up to $9.5M was still unclaimed in tokens that still trade.

Can I still claim tokens that unlocked years ago?

Usually yes. Unless the programme set a deadline (Superfluid's claim-based schedules have one), unlocked tokens stay claimable. Whether they are still worth anything depends on whether the token still has a market.

Do I pay tax on vested tokens I haven't claimed?

Possibly. In the UK the vesting date is usually the taxable point for employee share awards, and HMRC's closest guidance for tokens points the same way, although there's no definitive rule. Check with a tax adviser.
